Pub Politics is a Social Enterprise with a mission to engage with the most isolated and politically disengaged members of society. We aim to address political inequality and rising social tensions through community-driven political education.
Focusing on improving political literacy and attainment in adults by ‘meeting them where they are’ both literally and figuratively. Political education is mostly offered in formal or ‘inorganic’ settings such as centres, schools or town halls. Whilst it has its purpose, this approach excludes the truly disengaged and politically isolated as it already assumes a level of knowledge, comfort and belonging before beginning the engagement.
Pub Politics travels around the UK, delivering grassroots political education through informal pub conversations designed to be compassionate and non-judgemental with the aim to improve knowledge, confidence, and reducing social tensions.
Two key components to Pub Politics are around innovation and intersectional strategy. As part of the grassroots approach, Pub Politics hopes to partner with a range of organisations such as charities, pubs and universities with cross-cutting missions which include subjects like voter registration, social isolation, anti-extremism, democratic engagement, and social mobility. The aim of developing a robust and strategic network of partners is to better understand the issues facing the impacted. Considering the importance of innovation, Pub Politics will lean on tech solutions where appropriate and continuously assess opportunities for creative solutions.
Third spaces, particularly pubs, have traditionally played a critical role in British political history. However, there has been a noticeable shift from in-person discussions on politics towards isolated conversations on social media platforms, causing greater societal tensions.
The intention is to only support communities in their participation in politics and help bridge the gap in knowledge to address social tensions, whilst supporting the critical third space like pubs and small businesses.
All Pub Politics sessions promote democratic engagement through help with voter registration and signposting to critical services.
